Heavy Electrical Engineering

Heavy Electrical Equipment Industry caters to the needs of the energy sector and other industrial sectors. Major equipment like boilers, turbo generators, turbines, transformers, switchgears, relays and related accessories are manufactured by this Sector.

The performance of this industry is closely linked to the power capacity addition programme of the country. Therefore, the market trend is driven by the India’s power sector requirement.

The industry is good mix of Public, Private and multinational OEMs resulting in a strong base for the manufacture of Heavy Electrical equipment in the country. Manufacturers of Heavy Electrical equipment have augmented their installed capacity to meet future power capacity addition targets, by fulfilling domestic and export demand.

Following, the global trends domestic manufacturers have absorbed the sub-critical technology (up to a unit capacity of 660 MW) and super critical technology (up to a unit capacity of 800 MW) for Thermal Power Generation, Gas turbines up to 260 MW Unit capacity and Transmission and Distribution equipment up to the voltage class of 1200 KV are also being manufactured in the country.

In addition, taking the lead conventional energy generation method, the domestic manufacturer are gearing up for adopting the ultra-super-critical technology for unit size of 800 MW and above for thermal sets. The world’s first Advanced Ultra Super-Critical (AUSC) technology based thermal power plant is being establishing in Sipat, Chhattisgarh. Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) and the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) have jointly developed this.
